With accessible magnificent swimming beaches, Tolaga Bay is an area rich in history and natural resources. You can kayak around the islands, fish or swim safely from the main town beach or at the foot of the wharf, grab a crayfish on a line, collect mussels or walk down the wharf which makes an excellent half hour stroll – bring your camera. Try your hand at feeding wild stingrays at Tatapouri (under the supervision of a guide). Launch your boat from the ramp behind the house or hire a local charter boat, spot the dolphins, the seals and the odd shy penguin. Collect crays, mussels and pauas off the rocks. For the keen surfer Tolaga Bay is a beach break on a sandy beach with a short fast wave, that often closes out. It's a hollow or wally wave giving good rides. When it's big you can jump off the wharf at the south end of the bay to get out the back. This is one of the few bays that can be sheltered in a southerly wind.
Stretch your legs and head out of a number of Tolaga Bay walks. There's the Ernest Reeve Walkway, Tatarahake, 20 minutes return walk up steep track leading to a fabulous views over the bay and farmland or head to the Tolaga Bay Wharf for a stroll and a spot of fishing. Explore the sheltered, beautiful sandy bay at Cooks Cove, perfect for swimming and relaxing. You'll cross farmland, light bush and across grassy open flats, keeping mainly to a track just below the cliff tops overlooking Tolaga Bay, one of the places of earlier contact between Maori and Pakeha in New Zealand.
Gaze at the milky way, wake up early so you can be the first to see the dawn, or stay indoors wrap yourself in a book from the bach selection, listen to the ocean crashing waves or the absence of man-made noise, watch the world go by and appreciate a very relaxing holiday at its best.
